Cookiepolicy

1. What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. They are widely used to make websites work, remember your preferences, and provide analytics information.

iPetition uses cookies and similar technologies (such as localStorage and sessionStorage) to operate the Service, maintain your session, and improve your experience. We do not use cookies for advertising or third-party tracking.

2. Essential Cookies

Essential cookies are required for the Service to function. Without them, you cannot log in, maintain a session, or use core features. These cookies cannot be disabled.

  • Authentication session: Maintains your logged-in state across page loads. Set by Supabase Auth and stored as secure, HTTP-only cookies.
  • CSRF protection: Prevents cross-site request forgery attacks on form submissions.
  • Locale preference: Stores your selected language (one of 25 supported languages) so the site renders in the correct locale.
  • Cookie consent: Remembers whether you have acknowledged this cookie notice.

3. Functional Cookies

Functional cookies remember your preferences and enhance your experience. They are not strictly required but improve usability.

  • Theme preference: Stores your light/dark mode selection in localStorage (ipetition-theme) so your theme persists across sessions.
  • Default country: Remembers your selected country for credit purchases and petition filtering.
  • Sidebar state: Remembers whether the dashboard sidebar is collapsed or expanded.
  • Form drafts: Temporarily stores petition draft content in sessionStorage to prevent data loss if you navigate away accidentally.

4. Analytics Cookies

We use minimal, privacy-respecting analytics to understand how the Service is used and to identify areas for improvement.

  • Analytics data is aggregated and anonymized — we do not track individual users across sessions.
  • We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party advertising trackers.
  • Analytics cookies collect: page views, feature usage patterns, error rates, and performance metrics.
  • No personally identifiable information is included in analytics data.

5. Third-Party Cookies

Some third-party services integrated into iPetition may set their own cookies:

  • Stripe: Sets cookies during the payment checkout flow for fraud prevention and payment processing. These cookies are governed by Stripe's Cookie Policy.
  • Google Maps: May set cookies when the interactive map is loaded on petition pages for geographic features. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
  • OAuth providers: Google and Apple may set cookies during the sign-in flow if you choose to authenticate via OAuth.

We do not control third-party cookies. Please refer to each provider's cookie policy for more information.

6. Mobile App Storage

Our mobile applications (iOS and Android) do not use browser cookies. Instead, they use equivalent device-local storage mechanisms:

  • AsyncStorage: Stores your theme preference (system/light/dark), authentication tokens, and cached data for offline access.
  • Secure Keychain / Keystore: Stores authentication credentials securely using platform-native encrypted storage.
  • SQLite: Stores pending offline signatures for synchronization when connectivity is restored.

These storage mechanisms serve the same purposes as cookies on the web and are subject to the same data practices described in this policy.

7. Managing Cookies

You can manage cookies in the following ways:

Browser Settings

Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies through their settings. Common browsers:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

In-App Controls

  • Theme: Changeable via the theme toggle in the header or Settings → Appearance.
  • Language: Changeable via the language selector in the header.
  • Country: Changeable in Settings or the Credits page.

Note: Blocking essential cookies will prevent you from logging in and using core features of the Service.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, legislation, or our practices. When we make material changes, we will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you via the Service.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed about our use of cookies.
